Living up to the label
The lifestyle of the cruising sailor is a pipe dream for many but an idyllic reality for some. Semi-retired cruising couple Sandy and Kelvin have launched the label Grotty Yachty which they hope will become to yachties what Billabong is to surfers.
Sandy explains "We wanted to produce dockside clothing which allows the wearer to be identified visually by others as someone who spends a lot of time on the ocean and around boats. I also did not want these sailors to have to spend a lot of money on a garment that is a reflection of their personality."
In true irreverent ozzie humour, Sandy and Kelvin launched their label under the name Grotty Yachty which is usually an affectionate term to describe liveaboard sailors. They are in-fact living on their Roberts 44 Offshore sloop in Airlie Beach, Whitsundays Australia and felt this clothing brand is less about the grot and more about the yacht.
